There are two different ways that states are legalizing marijuana, both of which offer great opportunities for marijuana businesses to grow. Medical marijuana has been used by many states as a first step that then leads to wider acceptance of the recreational use of marijuana. Based on the success of both of these types of marijuana legalization, many states are considering legalizing marijuana.
Although 23 states currently have laws permitting the medical use of marijuana, that represents less than half of the United States. Among the rest of the states, eleven are currently considering new laws allowing medicinal marijuana:
Which of these states will actually pass legislation on medical marijuana? That’s a tough guess, but Pennsylvania is conspicuously surrounded by states with a medical marijuana law, so it seems like a very likely candidate.
Although many spoke doom about legalization in Colorado and Washington, the effects a year later are minor. As a result of this positive outcome, several states are also considering adding their names to the list of states where a recreational marijuana business can set up shop. This includes:
Nevada is the furthest along, with a successful petition already before the legislature. With the state’s overall permissive culture, this seems like our most likely candidate for the next state with a recreational marijuana law.
No matter which state is next, it’s clear that recreational marijuana markets are soon to explode, which can lead to a lot of businesses in need of additional help getting up and running or setting up another location in a different state.
